Chemical oxygen demand is the parameter regulators and treatment plants use to judge the oxidisable organic load in water and wastewater, and it is the number that decides whether an effluent can be discharged. A COD determination set-up digests the sample in sealed tubes in a thermostatic reactor, then measures the result colorimetrically or by titration.
